I absolutely loved how you unlocked the extra story information by using the powers in the three different slots (active, modifier, and passive). I'll avoid spoilers, but anyone who has fought it knows why it was so infuriating to be locked out of my planning phase. That fucker took me like 20 tries to finally beat. My game was actually bugged, and I couldn't use the planning phase during the final boss fight. It all depends on your personal preferences. But if you like the dodge and close-range attacks, then you may end up with more of a brawler build. I adopted a hit-and-run style of gameplay, converting enemies to my side while using the dog as an additional distraction. The hardest part is figuring out a set of skills that will mesh well together and that you're able to effectively use.įor instance, I didn't have room for the dodge skill in my skill list, so I found myself hating close-ranged attacks - it didn't give me enough time to recover afterwards. Then I'd find a new combination that I loved even more. The game is nearly impossible without it.Īlso, experiment with different attack combos - I loved certain move combos and swore that I'd keep them until the end of the game. Perhaps that's an important distinction for your choice. But whereas Bastion very literally wears everything it has to offer on its sleeves, Transistor will make you dig down to every gem. Then again, that is not to say Transistor has wasted any design space either.
The fact that it feels easy to appreciate is largely due to the absence of wasted design. It is definitely the most tightly designed game I've ever played. Bastion is definitely easier to appreciate. It obfuscates interesting details, steals away traditionally expected plot moments, and wholly challenges the player to piece together what is still ultimately a rich and lively world. The story pulls a very risky move and holds hides much of its information from the player, rather than bluntly walk them through. In order to maximize each given combat setup you need change the way you play them.

Different compositions will change your tempo, your interaction with certain mechanics, and even the time spent playing in full action versus a planning phase. The combat has a much smaller range of options, but a much deeper complexity. Under the hood, however, all forms of combat funnel down to one common method of play, independent of your choices. You have many combinations of options and different combinations can superficially feel completely unique. The combat is a poster for huge breadth with little depth. It is almost impossible to leave the game without a thorough relationship to its world. The sideline areas pepper the objects and people in the world with small, but rich details. The core storyline gives you everything you need to know about the lore, characters, and current events.
