VALUE: Decent, considering the grade of execution and the current state of inflation. OOZE RATING: Smashed to a frizzle but still juicy, not oozy.

I could eat one of these babies several times a week - and I am slightly mortified to admit that I might, if I lived nearer the intersection of Washington and Shepherd. The clear beef flavor, the sticky cheese, the sharp kick of the pickles, the mellow tone of the grilled onions and the gentle bind of the “secret sauce” work together in gorgeous harmony. They cascade from the patty circumference in delicate scallops that look almost fractal. I’ve never encountered such magnificently frizzled patty edges, with such an evanescent crunch to them. QUALITY: Simple and smashing covers the joys of the Smash Burger Double. This latter sandwich resembles cheeseburger hash dressed with shredded iceberg and tomato, and while I found it pleasant enough in a nursery-food fashion, I wished I had ordered the spicy version.)

(There are single and triple versions of the Smash Burger on the tight little menu, as well as a more traditional Classic Burger dressed with lettuce and tomato, and a Chopped Cheese on a toasty sub roll. Then comes a paving of lightly grilled little onion squares and a topcoat of pink, mayo-based Bodega Sauce. On a grilled potato bun goes a squad of house-made pickle slices, a super-thin smashed beef patty, a square of American cheese, another vigorously smashed beef patty and yet another square of American cheese. They’ll even bring your food up when it’s ready.ĪRCHITECTURE: No salad stuff on the house specialty, the Smash Burger Double. If the weather’s nice, you can climb some outdoor stairs to a charming rooftop patio with sun-gold canopies and an expansive view. I’ve heard there were long waits when Burger Bodega first opened, but I went in late afternoon, when there was but a single person in front of me. ORDERING: Go through the cheerful counter line, pay up, give them your name, take a tabletop number and find a seat in the dining room at either a table or the long counter that parallels the service line. PRICE: $9.95 for the Smash Burger Double, a double-double cheeseburger $3.50 for fries 60 cents for Spicy Mayo or Harlem Aioli sauces $6.50 for a Craft Creamery ice-cream shake, for a pretax and tip total of $20.55 The service goes above and beyond, as does the rooftop patio and the hip-hop soundtrack. The dining room’s colors and lighting pop. Dhanani’s special-blend sauces are on hand to spice things up (always a Houston-friendly move), from burgers to fries to that hashed-up New York burger-adjacent specialty, the Chopped Cheese. WHERE TO EAT: Houston's Top 100 Restaurants The regulation double-double cheeseburger here made my eyes roll back in my head, and I am not exaggerating. It’s been a long time since I’ve been so transported by the textures and overall sandwich swagger of a new burger in town. Now, after a visit to Burger Bodega, Dhanani’s delightful 4-week-old brick-and-mortar shop on Washington Avenue, I understand the buzz. They attracted lines of eager customers and invariably sold out. If you’re attuned to Houston food chatter, you’ve probably heard about the smashburger pop-ups conducted by Abbas Dhanani over the past year or so. The original Double Smash Burger (two smash patties with American cheese, grilled onions, house-made pickles and bodega sauce on a potato bun) is the signature menu item a Burger Bodega.
